16th July, 2011 Artfire is Removing Their Free, Basic Accounts From Their Site - What Does Zibbet Think About That? Firstly, I want to make it abundantly clear that I am not here to throw stones at Artfire. The purpose of this email is NOT to tell you that Artfire is doing the wrong thing - they are doing what they feel is necessary based on their unique situation.  The purpose of this email is to inform you about our reasons for keeping Basic accounts here at Zibbet. In this email we'll cover a few things (it will be a long email - read when you have time!): 1. The details 2. Why Zibbet won't be getting rid of its free, Basic accounts 3. Are Basic Artfire sellers welcome on Zibbet? 1. THE DETAILS For those that have never heard of Artfire or don't have a clue what we're talking about... Artfire is another handmade venue, similar to Zibbet. They had a free, Basic account and an upgraded, paid account - again, similar to Zibbet. Yesterday they announced officially that their Basic Accounts would be shut down on August 15. How many sellers will this effect? Over 42,500 active Basic sellers will lose their shop (about 75% of their total sellers), at which point around 350,000 items will be unlisted from the site (about 25% of their total items). Why have they made this decision? You can read the full, official announcement here. 2. WHY WON'T ZIBBET BE GETTING RID OF ITS FREE, BASIC ACCOUNTS AS WELL? Zibbet and Artfire are two different venues, with two different leaders, with two different strategies for moving forward.  At Zibbet, we're a metrics driven business, which means that we track LOTS of different things - the numbers don't lie and we base our decisions on those metrics.  I want to share some of what we know with you, to help explain why having free, Basic accounts at Zibbet works well...for us. SEO benefits Firstly, I've harped on and on about this - the more active items we have on Zibbet, the more buyers we will have. Basic sellers list items, and those items help to bring in more buyer traffic - for everyone!  Basic sellers only account for 15% of the total sales on Artfire. They also only account for 25% of the active items - Do you think that would have something to do with their low sales percentage? You bet it does.  Less items, less traffic, less sales. Period. On Zibbet, our Premium sellers make up 24% of our active sellers and account for around 70% of the sales. Our Premium sellers do get more site exposure, have better tools and features to help them sell more and have unlimited, non-expiring, listings. There's no doubt that Premium is the way to go on Zibbet. We know that Basics will upgrade to Premium when they see the value to do so (and we certainly hope they do), but even if they don't that's ok - because... We make money off Basics too! We have a couple of exciting partnerships launching in the future which will allow us to make a small cut off each sale that is transacted on Zibbet (Basic and Premium). This DOES NOT come out of your pocket - you are not charged a cent, nor will you even notice a difference to your service. These partnerships will be announced when we are ready to roll them out.  Basic sellers make sales too, therefore they will make us money. Just another reason why Basic sellers add value and are here to stay at Zibbet. Basic sellers need time to upgrade Our metrics tell us that Basic sellers need time to decide whether to upgrade or not and we're willing to give them the time that they need. Some sellers will never ever upgrade, and that is something that we're aware of and are fine with. Hosting costs are so low these days that these sellers are literally no burden on us financially. Check out this graph which shows historically how long it takes for our Basic sellers to upgrade to Premium. Most upgrade within the first couple of weeks (as you can see below), but there are still sellers upgrading every day in the 365 day period shown. This means that the Basic account is serving its purpose as a 'taste-tester' that compels sellers to upgrade over time - which puts money in our pockets to keep making Zibbet better and better... The graph below is a little more crazy and complex, but I'll try to explain. We track your activity (sales, upgrades, downgrades, etc) based on the month and year you signed up to become a member of Zibbet. We call this your 'cohort', which is the group we associate you with for the life of your account. This allows us to find 'trends', which is why I say that we're a data driven company - the numbers don't lie, and they help us to base all our major decisions on.  This graph shows the percentage of seller registrations that go Premium. And as you can see, over time a greater and increasing percentage of sellers will upgrade to Premium over time. The higher lines, representing a greater percentage of sellers that have gone Premium, belong to earlier cohorts. You can see that from the February, 2010 cohort, 20.85% of the seller registrations we received that month have upgraded to Premium.  Therefore, we can again conclude that over extended periods of time, more and more sellers will see the benefits of being Premium, and upgrade. 3. ARE BASIC ARTFIRE SELLERS WELCOME ON ZIBBET? Yes!  We welcome them with open arms, all 42,500 of them can make their home at Zibbet and they can bring all 350,000 items with them (and hopefully list 50 items each to make over 2 million items!).  This would bring huge SEO benefits to Zibbet and will increase the sales of all our sellers.  If you love Zibbet and you love sales, you should be telling Basic Artfire sellers to join us. To help make spreading the word even easier, I've created a special coupon code that will give them a free 45 day trial of our Premium Account (monthly or yearly). This was FuN ::: Quilts Made in a Tin Can

I sold another banner on Zibbet. A sale is nice to get, yes, yeah, WOOT!, and all that hip hip hooray stuff. But besides the dollar factor it was the communication and friendly banter back and forth, the LOLs, that made this an especially fun Zibbet Shop Banner to do. The "communication" factor and the "making friends" factor is the best part of selling on line.

Now that this banner, avatar and business card is done, I can tell you that shopping with the Tin Can Quilter will be a pleasurable experience. 

Stranger turned friend and I look forward to the Tin Can parking in my yard for a visit someday.

Eco-Friendly Purchase from Mimi & Colette

I love this Swiffer cover I bought from Mimi & Colette. First, I want to make it clear that I have never used a Swiffer as they are sold with those disgusting-smelling chemical-soaked disposable things that you put on them. My sister bought me the Swiffer a long time ago, and it just sat with the broom and did not get used.

When I saw that people could now buy a reusable cotton cover for this cleaning gadget, I thought that was pretty cool. I ordered mine from Mimi & Colette on Zibbet.com. Always a fun day when packages arrive

I was perusing the Zibbet Community the other day and saw this bookmark posed on the cover of Annie Freeman's Fabulous Traveling Funeral.

It caught my eye because this is one of the books on my very long list I want to read. I've been trading books on paperbackswap since 2006. I have mailed out 208 books and received 187 books.

I commented where the photo was posted and said that I should get that bookmark for reading that book. I went to her shop "All About the Buttons" to buy the bookmark, but got distracted by all the other wonderful things in her shop. I decided what I really needed was dish cloths. She makes some really nice 100% cotton ones. I ordered the dish cloths instead and told her I needed those more than a bookmark because I generally just use a piece of paper, the slip that comes with the paperbackswap books.

I took Annie Freeman's Fabulous Traveling Funeral off the bookcase. Okay not "the" bookshelf, but "one of" the bookcases. (More confessions: I have 8 bookcases in this house crammed with books.)

I brought the book to the "reading room" and began reading. When I stopped, I realized there was no paper slip in the book so I used the other kind of paper found in the "reading room."

When I opened up the package from All About the Buttons, not only did I find the exquisite dish cloths, but a wonderful surprise was also enclosed.....a bookmark.....

.....with a cute little card that said, "Enjoy! Slips of paper doesn't cut it! Barbra" Wasn't that sweet?

All About the Buttons makes all kinds of things from clocks to cozies and everything has buttons on it. If you need some nice gifts to have on hand, wouldn't these wash cloths make a a pretty package. Look how nice she presents them,

Memorial Day Fun on Zibbet

It's quiet today on the Internet because many families are off at the beach, family picnics, or camping trips.

Memorial Day  although a somber holiday to remember the men and women who died in wars,  has also become a time of families and friends gathering in the outdoors for food and merriment.

The first known Memorial Day was celebrated in Waterloo, New York.

If you know someone who lost a loved one you might want to take a bunch of hand picked flowers to them as depicted in this print of a painting by Patty Fleckenstein.

Happy Earth Day!

Dropped my daughter, The Purple Rat off at the college this morning all dressed for Earth Day in her "Tread Lightly" t-shirt made of organic cotton, her locally made palm straw hat, a ring she made from newspapers, a beaded bracelet made from legos and another one made of paper beads. She is wearing her rat necklace made from a bottle cap. She has a bead in her braid she made out of fabric.

She is standing in front of a patch of Saw Palmetto which are native to Florida and in the background are Native Slash Pine trees.  The entire college campus grounds are environmentally correct.

Time for a Zibbet Update

Everyone has heard of Zibbet by now. But did you know:

Just in the last week they've sold over 300 Premium Accounts!  And over 200 were sold the week before that.

Zibbet has a new promotion going on.  Just $8 month for a Premium shop but.....over 250 sold already in 4 days, & only 214 left!

........That's what they said yesterday!!!!!

But I just checked and now there are only 155 left.

Hi guys,

I just wanted to quickly jump in here to add my two cents worth to what has been a pretty hectic week here at Zibbet, and apparently an 'interesting' one at Etsy.
I just wanted you guys to be able to get a bit of a philosophical feel for how Jonathan and I and our team like to run our organisation.
I figure if people are going to have the opportunity to trust us, then it will require communication and getting to know one another a bit more.
So in that vein I'd like to list a few of our beliefs and values concerning how we would like to see Zibbet move forward as it grows bigger.

1. I want to say very emphatically that here at Z we are not in the business of bagging other venues. Whether they are better or worse than Z, we are not here to cast a shadow on what they do. Especially in light of events this week, let me say we are not interested in tearing down Etsy. We have a lot of respect for Etsy and what they have achieved and there is lots that we can learn from them.
2. Our leadership of Zibbet will not always be perfect, because as humans, we are imperfect. However, we will always endeavour to give our very best effort for the marketplace we have created and those who choose to belong to it. We will make mistakes, but we will never stop trying not to.
3. We will always seek to maintain the highest level of communication with our members as possible. This is motivated by the genuine desire to make Zibbet the best selling venue it possibly can be for your sake. We will always try to be available to our sellers by answering questions, listening to concerns or ideas and generally just being available to personally contribute to peoples' needs. Even as we grow very big, Jonathan and I plan to stay heavily involved in communicating directly with as many sellers as we possibly can. We know this will stretch us, but we are committed to it.
4. Common courtesy is a passion of ours so this will continue to dictate our behaviors and the way in which we interact with you. We believe if someone asks a question they deserve an answer. If we make a mistake, we will own it and apologise. We aim to treat every person with respect. We know we will probably not be able to please everyone, but we will not engage in the practice of 'simply writing people off' because they are upset about something.

All of this may sound lofty or overly romantic and nostalgic, but it is the truthful reality of our desire going forward.

If we work together, we can build one of the greatest online selling venues of all time.

I won a $50 Shopping Spree on Zibbet

WOW! I am so excited. I entered a contest on Zibbet to win a $50 shopping spree. To enter all you had to do was advertise that Zibbet had just 295 Premium shops left at the low price of $7 month.

You could enter as many times as you wanted as long as each place you advertised was a different audience. I posted 48 ads. There were 118 entries.

I advertised on Twitter, Facebook, various Yahoo Groups I belong to, different Flickr Groups I belong to, Demand Studios, Blip.fm radio, My Yahoo Profile, My Space, Blogs, Craigslist, Amazon, Etsy, Paperback Swap, CD Swap, DVD Swap, Oodle, Shutterfly, classifieds.com, You Tube and Google.

My advertising brought in 277 Click-throughs which means if any of those 277 people decide to open a Zibbet shop, they will be referrals. I signed up 4 new sellers on Zibbet and one of them opened a Premium shop which reduces my monthly cost down from $7 to $6 month.

I'm going to keep doing that every week until I have 7 referrals and my shop will be FREE Forever.

Check out all the neat stuff I got with my $50 shopping spree. Well, I did go a little over and added the balance, but it was so difficult to decide because there are so many wonderful handcrafted items on Zibbet I would love to have.

First, this sheep made by an 86-year old grandmother was on my wish list for a while. Both my daughters agreed, we must have one of those sheep from Ignis Fatuus.

George of the What Knot Shop makes bracelets that we love. This guy is just one of the nicest folks I have "met." At Christmastime I had contacted him on Etsy and asked if he would consider trading a particular bracelet I had picked out for my daughter for buttons that I make. I told him I was shopping on a budget of nothing after Etsy closed my shop down just as the holiday shopping had started. He was horrified as most folks have been, and instead of a trade, he just asked for my address so he could mail it to her. What a guy! When I gave it to her Christmas morning I told her it wasn't from me, but from George. My daughter lives in the it, she wears it as an anklet and loves it so much.

He has a lot of good karma coming his way. He is easy to talk to and can make anything your heart desires in any size.

Then George opened a Zibbet Shop. I am extremely happy to be purchasing this awesome bracelet from him now.

Handcrafted ribbon? I have never before seen ribbon made by a crafter. This fabric, hand dyed and hand stamped ribbon and can be used and reused. In our home we use fabric everything: fabric gift bags, fabric tablecloths, fabric napkins at every meal. There are no paper napkins or paper towels in our house. We use fabric coffee filters also. So this French ribbon, made by RU Piper Designs was calling our names. One daughter picked Marie Antoinette in Blue, and my other daughter picked Alice in Wonderland in Yellow. My choice was the Eiffel Tower in Green, but my funds were running out. The shop also has some very unusual pillows and bags.  Must see! 

The last thing we ordered with our winning shopping spree was unbleached muslin bags from Spider Daisy who sells party and craft supplies. I'll be using the bags for the mirrors I make.

Now I can't wait to go to the post office and find all these treasures coming from Utah, California, Minnesota, and The Netherlands.
